Tossing and turning at night isn’t fun. While you could turn to an over-the-counter sleep aid, holistic pharmacist Sherry Torkos says you may be able to avoid the side effects with a less medicated approach. Appearing on Minneapolis’ Fox News, she told viewers to consider a supplement containing Suntheanine, the 100 percent pure form of the amino acid L-theanine. Getting quality sleep is tough when you are too stressed to unwind at night. Suntheanine helps you relax so you sleep more like a baby.

Holistic pharmacist recommendations

Different people have different reasons as to why they can’t relax enough to get good quality sleep. “If you travel or work shift work, you may want to look at something like melatonin, a natural way to help improve sleep cycles,” Torkos said.

Sometimes an active mind keeps sleep at bay. “If stress is your issue, if you find you can’t unwind at night,” said Torkos, “think about a supplement that contains Suntheanine. It’s an amino acid which makes you feel more calm and more relaxed. It doesn’t cause next-day drowsiness.” Suntheanine stimulates the brain’s alpha wave activity. Alpha waves are associated with a relaxed, yet alert mental state. L-theanine occurs naturally in green tea.

Concerns about over-the-counter (OTC) sleep aids

Many sleep aids found in pharmacies contain antihistamines. They may leave you feeling groggy and unwell the next day. This is known as the hangover effect. There are also concerns about OTC sleep aids and drug interactions.

Suntheanine has been clinically researched with both children and adults using dosages ranging from 50 mg to 200 mg with no known side effects. It is available in chewables and also in capsules. “It’s easy to find in any health food store or pharmacy,” said Torkos. Suntheanine is available online at Tomorrow’s Nutrition. It’s also an ingredient in many consumer products.
